Leadership
Casey Wouters
PhD candidate in the Department of Chemistry. Her research focuses on detecting biomolecules & organisms through surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. She is passionate about science communication and creating communities for underrepresented scientists. In her free time, Casey loves crafting, cooking, reading, and spending time outside.
Parker Staub
PhD candidate in the Department of Chemistry. Their research involves the development and application of synthetic methods using transition metals and chiral organocatalysts. He is excited to create a strong sense of community within STEM for scientists holding historically marginalized identities. In their free time, you can find Parker bouldering, cycling, listening to music, playing piano, snowboarding, or cooking.
Rowan
PhD candidate in Department of Chemistry. Her research focuses on the biophysics of protein folding. When not in the lab, Rowan loves reading, playing board games, and making music.
Ella Graham
Sustainability Coordinator at the Minneapolis Downtown Improvement District. Her research work includes monitoring street trees and soil conditions plus tracking tree survival rates. She also organizes volunteer opportunities including plant inventories, tree plantings, tree watering parties, and the Adopt a Rain Garden program. Outside of work, Ella enjoys reading, iced lattes, and being indecisive as a way to express her bisexuality.
Manuraj Kallumkal
PhD candidate in the Department of Chemistry. His research focuses on exploring atomically precise multimetallic cluster platforms for advancing molecular-level understanding of catalytic reactions. He is passionate about conversing exciting science in the queer community and intriguing scientific curiosity in young minds. Manu hails from Kerala, one of the most southern tropical state in India, and embraces the opposite climate in Minnesota. Outside of research, he enjoys exploring diverse cuisines, recreating mom’s recipes, city nightlife, hiking, dancing, and indoor decoration.
Argo Farlin
PhD candidate in Department of Chemistry. Their research aims to modify transmission electron microscopy to capture atomic-scale images of materials prone to damage under standard electron beam exposure. Outside of the lab Argo enjoys all things outdoors. canoeing, camping, and cross country skiing are some of their favorites. Argo also enjoys playing board games, cooking, and going on walks with their cat.
Davy DeKrey
Gay man and a PhD candidate of plant pathology with a molecular biology emphasis in CFANS. His graduate research is on grapevine trunk diseases of cold-hardy hybrid grapevine varieties grown in Northern Midwest vineyards. Originally from Bemidji in Northern Minnesota, Davy enjoys a strong winter to play in the snow as well as killing house plants, mushroom hunting, camping, hiking, biking, dancing, playing video games, and teaching his cat tricks.
Lee Penn
A nonbinary/genderqueer/queer chemistry professor, and they are the Queer Science advisor. Their research group of nine graduate students and several undergraduate students focuses on fundamental formation and growth mechanisms of nanoparticles, green methods for making nanomaterials, and the roles nanoparticles play in chemical transformations in the environment.
